A few families and friends together with the Little Adventure’s crew made up an expedition team geared up for a 4x4 Hill climb on the 22nd of December. The trail ominously named Devil's Staircase is a classic, some would say legendary, off road jeep Track, which follow a route from Uva to the Central Province Highlands. The journey began at 4.00 am from Colombo with a stop at Belihuloya for breakfast and a small briefing to get everyone on the right track. The trail drive started at 9.30am with a turn off at Kalupahana to Bambarakanda waterfalls. Making a stop at the Bambarakanda falls, the crew took the challenge of a 500m hike to the base of the waterfall to set eyes on a beautiful rock pool and the dancing waterfall.
Back on track, they made it through the tougher roads that kept deteriorating as they went and engaging the 4WD became necessary. This section also served as an opportunity for the drivers to test the different traction controls on each of their vehicles. Certain sections it was necessary to engage 4WD low range to control the vehicles progress uphill on downhill. The Team comprised of double cabs and SUVs made it through tarred roads to concrete roads, paved pathways, till they finally reached no road at all, rather just rock and mud.
Next stop was Devil’s gap with 30 elbow bends to tackle on the way and a few slippery sections. The driving conditions deteriorated fast as the fog rolled in and brought down visibility to few meteRs. Arriving at West Haputalle Tea Estate the team made a stop at a school located in a rural estate to hand over toy boxes donated by a few generous individuals and the Rotary club of Colombo Regency.
Then came lunch hour where the team enjoyed a typical Sri lankan meal wrapped up in Banana leaf and served hot under a makeshift hut with a breathtaking view of the valley below. Taking in the invigorating atmosphere of the vegetation around, the crew enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate to lighten up the spirits before they reset on their journey.
Next up were the Devil’s Steps ranging from West Haputale to King’s Lynn where they made their way through four very sharp hairpin bends. The King’s Lynn also known as the Grand Canyon (Of Sri lanka) gave them an astonishingly captivating view opening up to full landscape below which was harmoniously lit with a drizzle of sunlight.
After an exhilarating journey, the team exited the trail at 5.30pm fro |
